This newsletter comes from the advisers working to support language teaching and learning for teachers of all languages being taught in our region: Te Reo Māori, New Zealand Sign Language, Afrikaans, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Samoan, and Spanish. We are sending this newsletter to all schools with students in years 7 – 13. It contains useful contact details, important dates for 2007, language resources information, PD details for Term 1, and information updates for your reference. Enclosed is a fax-back form to help us to update our records of language teaching in our region. Please return it promptly. Thank you.
In 2008, Jo Guthrie will continue working in Learning Languages, Years 7 – 13, and Sarah Perkins will be working half-time in Learning Languages, Years 7 – 13, and half-time with the secondary AtoL (Assess to Learn) contract. Jane Brown will continue to provide support for teachers of te reo Maori, Years 1 – 8, and Kathleen Scott will be focusing on Years 7 – 13. Kathleen is replacing Adrienne Taylor who is on leave for 2008. Tufulasi Taleni continues to provide support for teachers of Samoan. Stephanie Barnett completed her contract with UC Education Plus last year, and schools who want to follow up work they began with Stephanie in 2007 should contact Jo Guthrie.

It is our intention that the website be your first port of call for information about key dates, professional learning opportunities, competitions, templates and NCEA updates. Resources and previous newsletters are also available to be downloaded from this site.
In the past, we have also sent out regular email updates (Languages e-link) but these will be less frequent from now on as we will update notices on the website as soon as new information becomes available. 4-10 May 2009: New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL)

DANZ (recently rebranded from Deaf Association of NZ to Deaf Aotearoa NZ) are producing kits for use in schools during Sign Language week.
There will be two DVDs, one the basics of A-Z, 1-100, colours and food, the second a revamp of last years kit to introduce students to the dynamics of “the richness of the language”. Apparently the kits were quite popular last year. http://www.deaf.co.nz/ is the link to DANZ.

Take the opportunity to celebrate languages in your school. International Languages Week (ILW) is a good time to raise the profile of language learning within and between schools. Kura Reo ki Otautahi : 21-25 April.
The Kura Reo a full immersion week with Te Taura Whiri tutors like Timoti Karetu and Te Wahoroi Shortland. It is for people who have more than beginner reo skills. The Rex Programme
Under the above programme, schools are invited to apply to host a visiting Japanese teacher for twenty months from August 2008 to April 2010. The programme is part of the New Zealand Japan Exchange Programme (NZJEP) and is supported by the Ministry of Education.
The programme is one whereby Japanese teachers are sent to English speaking countries to teach Japanese. Those selected to participate spend four months (April - July) at the Tokyo University of Foreign Languages on a special training course learning how to teach Japanese as a foreign language.
The New Zealand Japan Exchange Programme
This programme which is managed by International Languages Aotearoa New Zealand (ILANZ) on behalf of the Ministry of Education, provides an accommodation grant of up to $22,000 for the twenty months of the teacher’s stay as well as a $5,000 setting-up allowance. Education authorities in both countries are required to sign an agreement outlining arrangements.

Japanese Monbukagakusho Scholarship – Teacher-Training programme
This scholarship is offered to foreign teachers who wish to conduct research on school education at Japanese universities. Applicants must be NZ citizens born on or after 2 April 1973 and have at least five years experience in total as of 1 April 2008 as a school teacher or teacher-trainer. Scholarship recipients will receive instruction in Japanese. The term of scholarship is from October 2008 – March 2010.

NZALT Certificates of Excellence for students in years 11 to 13
Recognise your students’ exceptional achievement. A student is eligible to receive a Certificate of excellence if s/he has gained at least three excellences in a language in any one year. NZALT will provide certificates, suitably endorsed, for NZALT members to award to their students.

Learning languages in the New Zealand Curriculum
There is a clear expectation from the Minister and Ministry of Education that schools with students in years 7–10 should be working towards including a quality second language programme when designing their school curriculum.
It is also expected that all New Zealand students will have the opportunity to acquire knowledge of te reo Māori me ona tikanga. This acknowledges New Zealand’s bicultural foundation.
Schools that are not currently in a position to offer a second language programme for their students in years 7–10 can access support to plan and begin a languages programme.

The Ministry plans to review the wording of requirements for schools under the sections, The school curriculum: design and review and Requirements for boards of trustees, by 2010.

Learning Media Resources: Ngā Rauemi o Te Pou Taki Kōrero
The Learning Language Series
The language kits currently available are Hao! (Chinese), Oui! (French), Ja! (German), Hai! (Japanese) and Si! (Spanish). and Ka mau te wehi for Te Reo Māori
This series has been designed to encourage non-specialist language teachers to adopt the role of facilitator in the classroom, as they learn alongside their students. Each resource provides an integrated package of materials designed to offer a flexible entry-level resource for teachers and students new to each language.
Each New Zealand school is entitled to one full kit of the modules per language. (The full kit consists of modules 1-20 , an Audio Cd & 2 video tapes-an introductory video tape & a language specific tape.) Additional copies of the modules (hard copy) in any language are free, so each teacher can have their own copy of the kit. Additional copies of the video tapes are $25 each. Australian Language Certificates: He Tīwhikete reo nō Ahitereiria
Assessment of Language Competence Certificates 2007
The 2007 Assessment of languages Competence Certificates will be held from 7 – 9 August. This is an international testing programme developed annually by the Australian Council for Educational Research. The programme consists of multiple choice tests in reading and listening offered at various levels in six languages (Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, and Japanese). Participants receive a certificate and an analysis of their results.

NZALT Certificates of Excellence for students in years 11 to 13
Recognise your students’ exceptional achievement. A student is eligible to receive a Certificate of excellence if s/he has gained at least three excellences in a language in any one year. NZALT will provide certificates, suitably endorsed, for NZALT members to award to their students.

The National Languages Advisers are able to provide professional support for international languages. Learning languages in the New Zealand Curriculum
There is a clear expectation from the Minister and Ministry of Education that schools with students in years 7–10 should be working towards including a quality second language programme when designing their school curriculum.
It is also expected that all New Zealand students will have the opportunity to acquire knowledge of te reo Māori me ona tikanga. This acknowledges New Zealand’s bicultural foundation.
Schools that are not currently in a position to offer a second language programme for their students in years 7–10 can access support to plan and begin a languages programme.

The Ministry plans to review the wording of requirements for schools under the sections, The school curriculum: design and review and Requirements for boards of trustees, by 2010.

Learning Media Resources: Ngā Rauemi o Te Pou Taki Kōrero
The Learning Language Series
The language kits currently available are Hao! (Chinese), Oui! (French), Ja! (German), Hai! (Japanese) and Si! (Spanish). and Ka mau te wehi for Te Reo MāoriThis series has been designed to encourage non-specialist language teachers to adopt the role of facilitator in the classroom, as they learn alongside their students. Each resource provides an integrated package of materials designed to offer a flexible entry-level resource for teachers and students new to each language.
Each New Zealand school is entitled to one full kit of the modules per language. (The full kit consists of modules 1-20 , an Audio Cd & 2 video tapes-an introductory video tape & a language specific tape.) Additional copies of the modules (hard copy) in any language are free, so each teacher can have their own copy of the kit. Additional copies of the video tapes are $25 each. Australian Language Certificates: He Tīwhikete reo nō Ahitereiria
Assessment of Language Competence Certificates 2007The 2007 Assessment of languages Competence Certificates will be held from 7 – 9 August. This is an international testing programme developed annually by the Australian Council for Educational Research. The programme consists of multiple choice tests in reading and listening offered at various levels in six languages (Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, and Japanese). Participants receive a certificate and an analysis of their results.
